Speaking with Power and Purpose

Speaking with Power and Purpose
One of the most important duties of a leader of any ministry is representing your organization to the public. If we don't describe the mission and cast the vision well, we won't have partners to help us make a positive impact in the lives of those we are trying to reach. Our audience, whether it be a church congregation, a civic club, etc., wants to be able to apply the information they've just heard. We need to tell them why they need to hear it and what we are going to be speaking to them about.
A few of the characteristics of a great speaker are informative, memorable, and confident. Speaking of confidence, I know the days of feeling so thankful that there was a large podium in front of me so that the audience could not see my knees shaking as I spoke. My confidence sometimes waned but as the passion inside me grew for the cause I was speaking, my confidence also increased. Then, as my audiences grew, confidence increased with experience. It is common to have nervousness but we overcome that through continuing to speak when the opportunity presents itself.
Being memorable means that we don't make it about ourselves. Speaking with purpose means that we speak of the faces of the people we serve. When we connect a heart with the face of someone in need, we are connecting a bridge of hope to many and allowing others to be a part of building that bridge. It's very important that our presentation be memorable and informative.
I like to open with a thought provoking question and close with a powerful quote to inspire a call to action. Example: "How do you view the child in the womb of a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, as a product of a sexual sin or as a gift from God?" I follow up with God's word that every child is a gift and heritage from the Lord, regardless of circumstances and then offer valuable education and information in-between about the mission.
I often use the quote by Ronald Reagan, "Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid" to inspire the audience to join us in standing for the sanctity of life in the womb. When statistics are shared such as "1 in 3 women in this room have had an abortion or will have by the age of 45," it makes the people we are talking about human.
We must be powerful voices for the mission we represent to gain the support needed and to educate our society. It's not always easy but we must utilize our voices for those who have none. I would love to help be a powerful voice for life!
